This is an extract from a 1987 film by the German director Wim Wenders. City of Angels was considered a remake of this film, although the story varies quite a lot from the original. Watch this sequence and discuss the director's intentions.
In this short extract from a german film, directed by Wim Wenders, the intention of a paticular genre that the director might be trying to convey is evident through the different camera shots, sound, visual style and the cinematography.
The concept of a "Thiller" is represented in the first scene of this extract when the camera pans to the main two protagonists in the film.This makes them seem like they are the protagonist because the camera pans towards them after over looking what everyone else is doing, this makes them seem more important then the rest. The reason for why the characters might influence the theme of a "Thiller" movie of the clothes that is worn by them, for example, everyone one who was reading books in the library were wearing casual clothing, however, the two main protagonists were wearing big black coats which carry the connotations of something that is mysterous
and evil. This is because of the connotations that the colour black carries.
This is rienforced by the non diegectic sound that is used half way through the clip, when one of the protagonists is in the librray helping a child. A music track has been added to the to the scene in the edited process to give the scene a rather cold feel. This is because of the contrast between the the coral music with the use of the dark cinematography, for example the contrast between the darkness of the library and the lighting that is above it. Therefore both of the two elements merge together giving the film a thiller theme to it.
